Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu!
Welcome to a new year! For the month of January, we will be featuring a glorious pair of osechi side-dishes. “Osechi ryouri” is basically traditional Japanese New Year dishes. Osechi is usually served in bento-like boxes, with a big variety of dishes. This event, we will be shining our spotlights on the two dishes, tazukuri and kurikinton.
“Tazukuri” is sugared dried sardines cooked in soy sauce, and is commonly eaten as a snack, to accompany tea or meals, and not by itself. This dish symbolizes an abundant harvest, as the kanji of tazukuri literally means “rice paddy maker”, and the fish was historically used to fertilize rice fields. Meanwhile, “kurikinton” is basically mashed sweet potato with sweetened chestnuts.
Sound like a good way to start your new year?
