Osechi Ryouri Session

Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu!

Welcome to a new year! For the month of January, we will be featuring a glorious pair of osechi side-dishes. “Osechi ryouri” is basically traditional Japanese New Year dishes. Osechi is usually served in bento-like boxes, with a big variety of dishes. This event, we will be shining our spotlights on the two dishes, tazukuri and kurikinton.

“Tazukuri” is sugared dried sardines cooked in soy sauce, and is commonly eaten as a snack, to accompany tea or meals, and not by itself. This dish symbolizes an abundant harvest, as the kanji of tazukuri literally means “rice paddy maker”, and the fish was historically used to fertilize rice fields. Meanwhile, “kurikinton” is basically mashed sweet potato with sweetened chestnuts.

Sound like a good way to start your new year?

Don’t pass on this opportunity! Join us for our Osechi making session! Allow us the honour of teaching and guiding you to cooking these wonderful sweet dishes.

Anime Movies Screening

Ever heard about a girl who can time-leap or a girl raised by a pack of wolves?

Hi everyone! For the month of January, the anime/manga sub-committee will screen two of the highest grossing and most popular anime movies in Japan: Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo and Princess Mononoke.

Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) or TokiKake for short, tells a story of a high school girl, Makoto Konno, who realizes she has the power to go back in time and re-do things, when she impossibly avoids a fatal accident at a train crossing one day.

One of Hayao Miyazaki’s famous works, Princess Mononoke tells a story of the ancient times where the forces of man and the gods of the beasts are beginning to clash over the forests and their natural resources. When young Ashitaka, the prince of an isolated village, kills a rampaging boar god, he is afflicted with a curse. There is also another human who fights with the beasts – San, the Princess Mononoke. Ashitaka seeks only to find answers, but he soon finds himself in the middle of an epic struggle.

So, are you curious to find out about Makoto is going to do with her time-leap power? Or about Ashitaka and San’s fate? Then come and join us at the anime screening!

Date: Saturday, 17 January 2009
Time: 10.00am to 12.00pm (Princess Mononoke); 1.00pm to 3.00pm (TokiKake)
