It’s official. Kinokuniya at Liang Court will shut down for good on 21st April, leaving it with 3 retail outlets, at Ngee Ann City, Bugis Junction and Jem.
Compared to the other retail outlets, the one at Liang Court holds a special place for many of us JCG members and alumnus. I’m writing this to commemorate and remember Kinokuniya at Liang Court.
is was JCG’s, especially Anime Manga Subcom’s, secret hang out spot. This secret spot with low traffic let our members browse and delight ourselves at our own pace, like a child at a candy store ogling over its contents.
I was introduced to the secret hideout through my seniors when I’ve joined the Anime and Manga (AM) subcommittee. Kinokuniya @ Liang Court was part of the yearly tradition for the AM seniors to bring their freshies during the first outing of the new AY. We roamed free in this labyrinth of knowledge.
It was then that I found out about the bargaining alley, uniquely available only at its Liang Court branch.
Bargain Alley – Where the Cheap and Good Stuff lies
Seeking good deals? As students with little to no monetary income, we are, sad to say – ‘broke’.
The bargaining alley is a treasure trove of knowledge, packed with surprises that you never know what you might find, at steeply discounted prices.
I went back on 20th April, a day before the store closes, for nostalgia’s sake – Only to find out that my favourite 3 shelves (which have the cheapest stuff) were wiped clean. :(
This is their ‘clearance’ sale, where the bookstore disposes of leftover items at only $2-$10. While my fellow members drown themselves in the new light novel and magazine sections, I was busily devouring the contents at the bargaining alley. I have bought Magazines (Newtype, Megumi etc), Mangas (Negima!, Mirai Nikki) and Artbooks.
For those who do not want to miss it, it is the store’s last day (21st April) and you can still make it if you go now!
After expending our energy at every session at Kinokuniya, we head down to the first floor for the delectable cream puffs!
Dulcet & Studio – Cream Puffs that Delights your Mouth
Indulging in desserts after a long day of exploring, we reward ourselves with our long-awaited sugar.
To this day, I remembered how tasty it was – when you took the first bite, the cream explodes in your mouth (all those calories) and melts away your fatigue. There’s nothing better than eating together with friends, isn’t it? Thank goodness the store’s still there, do pay it a visit and try for yourself!
Note: Permission has been granted by subcom heads of the respective batches, but if your photo is being used and you want it removed, you can contact your heads or myself directly.

It was at this point that we realized we forgot about 2 of our other members so we went again.
While the actual store might’ve been closed for good, I’m sure the friendships made along the way would only blossom and grow stronger, and I’m really happy to say that I’m still meeting those members even as we get busy with our lives ahead.
This is a shout out to the team at Kinokuniya Liang Court – Thank you very much for all these years of great book, great content and great memories! We will miss you dearly. Sayonara.
