START WITH WHY (GOLDEN CIRCLE) – INTRODUCTION
This document guides the inculcation of the Golden Circle concept.
It was a hectic day for Tracy. Being JCG’s camp OIC, her primary role is to oversee the smooth implementation of the camp and ensure that its objectives are met. Like past years, the camp objective was for everyone to have fun, create meaningful memories and to find friends of like-minded interest.
Looking back, the biggest obstacle in planning was budget. Traditionally, members contribute a small fee equivalent of their own consumption cost. i.e. meals. However, this year, the majority of her maincommittee (MC) felt that since they have already contributed their precious time and effort, cost should be passed on to the new coming freshies.
Motivated by the prospect of a ‘free’ camp, each department set out to reduce cost. Programmers used everyday materials from home for their games i.e. pails which can be returned after the camp; Group Leaders (GLs) bought cheaper welfare items and didn’t buy group identity items; Logistics sourced for cheaper food. Dinner was omitted to save costs.
In the end, they successfully managed to reduce cost substantially, and passed the remaining costs to freshies. Proud of her MC, Tracy showered them with praise. Little did she know, she was set for irreversible consequences for the years to come.
Amongst them, attendance dropped significantly. Subcom members started skipping trainings (trials), citing family outing and part time work. Afterall, they haven’t invested any penny or feelings in it. When procrastination kicks in, they simply skip trial. Recruitment saw fewer freshies than before due to the increased in camp fees. During the actual camp, numerous helpers were not familiar with the camp schedules resulting in numerous delays. Freshies were given sub-par economic rice with no drinks, conflicting instructions to move from place to place and told by their GLs that this year’s camp is ‘fucked up’. As there was no dinner, many freshies left and didn’t return the next day.
Seniors and returning alumnus, surprised and upset, continuously questioned MC, overriding many decisions during the camp. During debrief, Tracy persistently defended her actions, attributing the mess to the lack of manpower and unity in the members. Under the barrage of questions from seniors, she snapped, adding another chapter to JCG Drama season 10. She railed at her members for taking advantage of her kindness to skip trainings, and blaming her for every single mishap. She insisted that she and her team did their very best, even going so far as to reduce their camp fees to zero successfully.
Why did this happen? What did Tracy did wrongly? What would you have done instead? Tracy has completely ignored the steps in the golden circle, which perhaps is the lifeline for the camp.
While there are no right or wrong answers, the golden circle provides insight in determining the direction of the camp, or any decision making for that matter.
